Hagglethorn Hollow on Kickstarter

Greetings Delvers! I am very excited about this! It may have been something you are following already but I thought I should mention a project begun here in New Zealand that has just launched on Kickstarter. Hagglethorn Hollow is the lovingly designed, sculpted by hand, terrain set by Johnny Fraser-Allen.

In the video above (shot by Steve Unwin), Adam Savage talks with Johnny about the full project but for the moment, the Labyrinth and Buildings that are on offer. All of it is modular, and can be mixed and matched in an incredibly organic way.

Because Johnny also works for Weta, it has a real film-set model level of detail. I can't wait to have Hagglethorn Hollow on my gaming table! He talks more about his background here in an interview with Beasts of War:

Sculpting Fantasy Miniatures + Wizard Star Hat University

Fly you fools!

Part of the joy of belonging to a gaming group is the creativity that comes from sharing time together in world's where the only limit is your imagination. Such as this Wizard of Star Hat University, or *^U, a character that came from our D&D sessions. Grant Stone liked the star I had painted on a wizard's hat and that began the back storyline of where wizards get their qualifications.

I would say that I could have been smoother with the folds of the robes and cloak. However, this does give him a road worn look; a traveller of paths seldom tread. The backpack and scroll were inspired by an old Citadel miniature I have. There is a touch of Terry Pratchett's Rincewind, Gandalf the Grey and Merlin. Quite the blend!

So that makes four miniatures. I may need to come up with a name for this enterprise. Perry Miniatures is already taken!

Sir Terry Pratchett + Rest In Peace

Sir Terry Pratchett has died, aged 66.

It feels like a favourite uncle has left me, even though I didn't know Terry Pratchett personally. Because he travelled extensively on his books tours, even to little far flung places like Aotearoa (New Zealand), Terry is one of the few literary giants I have met. Three times in fact. Like many kiwis, I loved his books and his well-spoken gentle manner, though I suspect he wasn't a nice guy. In the same way that Jesus wasn't nice. Neil Gaiman said his friend was fueled by fury and I may be inclined to agree.

I've written of my love of Terry Pratchett's fantastic books before. I am one of the millions of fans inspired by Discworld. I first read The Colour of Magic in my early teens soon after it's release. A fan of D&D and other RPGs, I devoured the Discworld series. They were fun-filled tales of adventure that took me to wonderful places and interesting times, often reminding me the importance of being human, making mistakes and being unique.

As a musician (Darcy Perry Band) I wrote a song inspired by one of his more memorable characters. Reaper Man was the seventh track on the Heavy Rain album.

The best life advice I ever heard from Sir Terry Pratchett was how he described himself as a writer, not because he had written a book but because he was currently writing his next one. His legacy of books (more than 70), humour and a wonderful way of putting words together that was often satirical but never sarcastic, will live on.

On my DiscWorld Mapp he wrote "To Darcy, Don't get lost!"
