Return to Blackhawk + Dungeons & Dragons

A real treasure.
We started off Monday night (game night) with a trip down the road to help herd a couple of rogue cows out of a back garden and back into the paddock. Lewis was away, so I wasn't expecting a call for help from the Morgans. Anyway, the Tamahere Officers Club came to the rescue!

I was back in the DM seat this week, after a couple of sessions as a player (with Lewis running Dungeon Crawl Classics). It was a slow start but our group of Cowherders were in a good mood and there was an enthusiastic rummage through the character sheet pile to find the surviving members of the D&D Blackhawk campaign.

Dave and Blair's characters leapt at the opportunity to leave Lolth's lair via a mysterious shimmering golden door. Thus they were transported back in the surrounding area of Shallow Water. Or to be more precise, brought to a ledge halfway up the mountain, beneath the ruined city of Blackhawk. A glorious sunset greeted them. In the distance a pair of dragons danced above the clouds, then decended towards the cliff face.

During the evening there were nostalgic moments. Greg had missed a few sessions, so there was some tying up of loose threads and sharing details about the journey so far. Also apparent were the many different unresolved quests (for want of a better word). It's great that there are still some things left undone.

The aforementioned dragons brought the characters swiftly down the mountain, over the ramshackle town of Shallow Water and across the lake, to Sorcerers Isle. Although the druid decided to transform into a hawk and fly under his own power.

Upon landing there was a brief reunion with the magi and covenfolk (3 days of healing and identifying magic items). They then gathered together a small group and embarked upon a quick reconnaissance mission to determine the nature of the mysterious attackers that had continued to harass the Covenant in their absence. The players are not ones to rest on their laurels.

Greg and Blair also picked some new characters to play from the NPC roster, bolstering the party with a cleric and another magic-user. Grim Eustace and Nickleback, both 7th level characters, will no doubt make themselves useful during the campaign. Dave's dwarven cleric Helgon also made a comeback. Last seen disappearing into a crevasse on the back of a falling ettin, the dwarf was previously missing and presumed terminally flat.

Not mine but the cover speaks to me.
The night ended in a cliff cavern after an encounter with frog men and a weird frog boy with a green dagger. The later mysteriously disappeared before the battle began. And what of the red frogs that sprang from the rune-carved cauldron, leaping through a crack in the wall?

So it really has been RPG month. Playing and DMing in a fine fellowship. What more could one ask for?

Petty Gods + Revised & Expanded Edition

Petty Gods: Revised and Expanded Edition.
My hardback copy of Petty Gods arrived yesterday and it really is amazing! I have the first copy to reach New Zealand. Almost 400 pages of magnificent creativity with enough juice to power a lifetime worth of fantasy campaigns. Packed full of gorgeous illustrations, Petty Gods really is a beautiful beast of a book.

As a fan of the more legendary contributors, it's humbling to have my own art and prose in print along with grandmasters of the hobby. James Ward and Erol Otus for example, who were playing the game when Dungeons & Dragons was born over forty years ago!

Ravel/Unravel by James Ward, illustrated by Darcy Perry.
I became involved in this project two years ago and the mammoth size of Petty Gods is only matched by the generosity of everyone that contributed to the book. A sign that the hobby is truly alive and well. The logo on the cover sums it up succinctly. ORC: Old-school Role-playing Community.

Having this book in my hands has also inspired me to write an Old School book in collaboration with some of the authors and artists, including fellow kiwis, Grant Stone and Rom Brown. It will feature characters and creations of the science-fantasy world of Blackhawk, my D&D campaign.

Painting Table Saturday 61 + Dark Elves

Citadel Dark Elves.
Painting Table Saturday #61. Here are a trio of classic dark elves from Games Workshop. These miniatures have a real Fighting Fantasy or Fiend Folio look about them.

I have given two of them modified shields. I think the horns add a level of menace. At their feet some luminous fungi provide a light source.  I expect to finish them this week and I'm certain these fiendish fellows will turn up in a game later this year.

They are a tribute to my good friend Alex who collected an army of dark elves for playing Warhammer Fantasy Battle back when we where young.

God bless you and have a happy new year!

Blackhawk Campaign +

It's been a few months since I've shared any news on the Blackhawk campaign. That's not because we've stopped playing D&D or that the nights of gaming haven't been memorable. I've found that the sessions have been enjoyable and rewarding for me as a DM. It's most likely that I don't want to give away too much information to the players through this blog. Each time we play, so many new ideas come through improvisation, that it's worth sharing some of them - even if they aren't going to bear fruit.

This post is also in memory of Father Jack, who was torn apart by angry beastmen in the Dark Forest. Alas, he was wounded beyond the healing skills of Helgon. However, that tragic tale will wait for a later post...

The Covenant continues to flourish, although some weaknesses are now apparent. Their island fortress* requires supplies by boat, which went missing and prompted direct action. That night's game had so many potential plot hooks. A few weeks had passed since the return from the ruins of Blackhawk. The treasures were divided between the party and those not researching new spells or studying magical items, were hard at work spending their gold in Shallowater.

Then the latest boat of supplies failed to arrive. Including the beer. Saunders and Helgon the dwarf were the first to raise the alarm. Two days overdue, it was going to be roasted onion for dinner unless they solved the case of the missing boat and crew.

A dozen of them set out from Sorcerers Isle, split into the remaining two boats. Saunders rowing one, with Vito, Father Jack, Nextor, Helgon and Arian. The other had Friar Nip at the oar, with Nick, Sebastian, Bill, Brodo Faggins and Niel.

Halfway to shore there was a splash as Niel entered the lake. One moment he was moaning about his missing lentils, next minute he was thrown down over the side by a shot to the head. His companions barely noticed until the next volley. Pfffft.

The Blackhawk campaign continues, with dramatic flair and weird happenings. A firm believer that the people make the game worth playing, I am constantly inspired by the way this group works together. The quality of a roleplaying game depends upon the people at the table. The improvisational skills and shrewd tactical choices made by the players often push my abilities as a DM to the limit. Rather than write a blow by blow account of each evening, I've decided henceforth to highlight characters the players have met, environs explored, or local rumours that may be investigated.

*Sorcerers Isle. The black heart of the campaign and home to a ragtag bunch of misfits who would be masters of magic. The Island is located in a lake. On the farthest shore lies Shallowater, in the shadow of the cliffs of doom, beneath the once great city of Blackhawk. This large town is the last desperate hope for civilisation in the wilderness called the Dark Forest.

Painting Table Saturday + 80s Citadel Chaos Warriors + Beastmen

Lewis lent me this set of rules for Western Gunfights.
Painting Table Saturday #52. This week, a fistful of lead ready for the gaming table. Life has been insanely busy this week, so I'm surprised I found some quiet time to get the brushes out.

Two more Chaos Warriors from the pre-slotta base days of Citadel Miniatures plus a Metal Magic (80s german miniature company) knight who originally came with a incredibly large lead dragon that has was given to a friend long ago. Perhaps this is St. George? Or Siegfried?

Also, more beastmen for the Blackhawk campaign. they may also be suitable as an alternate group of skirmishers for Saga.

The camera on my phone is terrible. I've posted hundreds of photos on this blog using it and I'm often left disappointed with the quality of the shots. It seems to suck the life right out of the miniature, leaving the colours dull and drab.

For example:

So, I decided to get the old Sony Cyber-shot 5.0 out. It's not an amazing camera by today's standards but it's far better than my phone. The results speak for themselves.

Two wow-very-rare Pre-slotta Citadel Warriors and a Metal Magic Knight.

Beastman Shaman with Waikato Chiefs Rugby supporter scarf.

More classic Beastmen. Handpainted Bugman's shield.

God bless you and have a great weekend!

PTS 50 + Orc Warlord Grunash + Wargaming Terrain

Forever Young.
Painting Table Saturday turns 50! Something old, something new. My wife and I celebrated 15 years of marriage this week, so there was really no time for painting.

Here is the mighty Orc Warlord, Grunash. He's featured in my D&D Blackhawk campaign and is a rather large fellow, converted from a 40k Black Ork which I bought with missing arms. It was an online auction purchase and I didn't realise it wasn't ordinary orc-size until it arrived in the mail. I have photos of the conversion and will post them when/if I find them. See if you can guess what he's made of.

Otherwise, there has been a quick flick of the brush on a handful of miniatures on the painting table. A couple of pre-slotta base Citadel Chaos Warriors are almost finished and my herd of beastmen is growing.

Inspired by +Chaos Convergence there is also some terrain construction going on. I hope to have some complete by next week.

Blackhawk Campaign + Gnomes

Tonight Dave lent me his DM Screen of Awesome.
Thursday night, game night. A report on last Thursday's session, which was a postponement of the usual Monday night session. The players were on fine form and a good time was had by all accounts.

"Taking stock of provisions and acquired wealth, we decided to head home rather than descend further into the dungeons beneath the ruined tower.

We climbed the stairs and entered the street, the morning light reflecting off the miasma about our knees.

Suddenly there were brown shapes moving betwixt our legs. A plague of giant rats! Spewing forth from the dungeon behind us, biting and gnawing at our rear flanks.

Weapons were drawn and no quarter was given. Blood, bone and fur went flying as the mêlée ensued. I saw Hiro hopping about with a rat attached to his crotch. Saunders knocked himself on the head but was soon standing again, a weird dream of fury amongst the mayhem. Tui missed a rat and sideswiped Bill, who grunted and kept swinging.

Despite these mishaps, our blades sang a song of misery. Before long the multitude became a pitiful few and fled before our might of arms.

Leaving that cursed city we strode into the dark forest. However, it had left it's mark on us. Some of our number were ill by the first night. A festering sickness came upon them. Vito and Nick were the worst afflicted.

The next day, if it can be called day in that black wood, others were soon stumbling on rock and root.

Ahead we saw a horrid thing." Red the Bard.

I will save you from more of my terrible prose. Suffice to say, the decision to leave the Tower of Xenopus and head for their stronghold was a cautious one by the players. Possibly born out of the desire to "level up" and identify magic items. They also had a kings ransom in coin and gems from the goblin's vault and those chests were getting heavy.

All my wilderness encounter rolls are random. Type of creature, number appearing, who is surprised (or has the upperhand) and their initial reaction to the party are all determined by the dice. The rest is roleplayed from that starting point.

The group decided to avoid the 'horrid thing' (a Carrion Crawler feasting upon some poor unfortunate soul) and cut an alternate track down the mountain. It was the first of three encounters in the Dark Forest, as they had bought themselves one less encounter roll by bribing the DM with one of Dave's birthday beers. The Gnome Encounter proved to be the most amusing. Greg's character Arian spoke for the party and the parley resulted in some good humour and also provided them an opportunity to heal the characters stricken by disease.

Dragon Warriors Gnomes.
The gnomes in Blackhawk are inspired by the dew-eyed, gnarled and earthy creatures from Dragon Warriors. They resemble the woods they tend. However, more than mere gardeners, I've turned them into deviant druids. The diseased characters entered a magical gnome tree and whatever happened in that weird place was not spoken of upon their return the next morning. Those characters 'Touched by Fae' were fully healed of The Black Death (and had a +1 boon to their Charisma score) but will probably never look a gnome in the eye again.

Good reaction rolls are only part of the players' good fortune. An encounter with a party of seven dwarves(!) was also favourable. Captain Vollos and his heavily-armoured, bearded company were travelling up the mountain to hunt goblins in the city but would've happily relieved the party of their loot and their lives had things turned bad. While talking the Captain had a habit of patting Gloria, his incredibly efficient looking crossbow. Helgor (Dave's Dwarf) was quick to distract attention from the treasure-laden chests with tales of the goblins they fought and bested in the ruins. They parted as friends.

Reaching the sleepy town of Shallowater, they party made straight for their boats and were soon safe within the walls of their island covenant. While the spellcasters in the party spent most of their time (over the next few weeks) in the covenant library studying new spells, trips were made back across the lake by (Blair's character) Vito, a fence and gambler by trade. He sold (Natural 20) the crystal ball he stole from Lucerne the Alchemist and then doubled his money (25 on his D30 roll) in games of chance. A considerably wealthier Vito is now banned from gambling in the town tavern. He was happy to be rid of the crystal ball though. It had been making death threats while he tried to rest.

It was actually Blair's other character Saunders, the ex-dockhand and man about town, that stole the crystal ball, sold it and went gambling with the money in Shallowater. He would blame Vito at the drop of a hat though. I mean come on, he's too big to be a thief.

What adventure awaits them now? In the words of the immortal bard, the world is their oyster. They've made a few enemies however. Goblins are renowned for their tracking skill. Lucerne will no doubt employ them to track down his crystal ball. The party also did nothing to hide their newfound wealth from the dwellers of Shallowater...

They also have two shards of Wyrdstone, which some of you may know of from the World of Warhammer. Life in the covenant is about to get interesting.

PTS 47 + Reaper Thief + Beastmen

Epic.
Painting Table Saturday! To the regular followers of this blog, welcome back. For anyone else who has stumbled upon this humble page, greetings! This week a Reaper miniature that I painted for Lewis and some classic Citadel / Games Workshop beastmen that I've collected for the Blackhawk campaign.

God bless you and have a great week!
