Wood Elf Sentinal + Lord of the Rings Painting Challenge

Painting Challenge 2016.
Here's this week's project for Painting Table Saturday. I have entered the '2016 FotM' Painting Challenge'. If you are up for the challenge click on the link and join the community.

This year it's a female character from Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit. No monsters, original base size and no dioramas. So the epic battle where Shelob is blinded by the light of Galadriel's Phial will have to wait.

Here are some Work In Progress photos from my painting table. I am not sure if this will be the miniature I enter but I have done my best to think outside the box. I mean, there aren't that many female characters in the world of Middle Earth!

In choosing a Wood Elf Sentinal miniature I was trying to avoid the obvious and popular characters from the movies.

While arranging some stones I also decided to be creative with the base. Instead of the often used rocky outcrop underfoot, why not a giant skull?

The red was a bold choice and one I initially thought I might paint over. As I continued with more muted woodland tones the red made even more of a statement. She's dangerous and deadly, like latrodectus bishopi, the red widow spider.

Well, at least it's believed to be venomous like it's other relatives. There are no medical records of bites: the red widow is an endangered species from Florida that seldom encounters humans. Sounds like an elf to me.

I have more detail to paint, from her face to her raiment. I also need to flock the base. Any feedback or suggestions are welcome!

Final model submission is on March 31, followed by voting in April. So why not enter yourself?

God bless and enjoy your week!

Warhammer 40k Squat + Gimli the Dwarf

40k Squat with Lazer gun.
It's the end of another week and time for Painting Table Saturday. I finished a couple of old miniatures, both from the 1980's. The Squat is from Citadel Miniatures and was a gift from my friend Lewis Morgan. Unfortunately it came without a backpack.

Hen's Tooth.
These are rare as hens teeth, so I improvised with an ammunition trolley from a Warhammer Fantasy Battle sprue (Battle For Skull Pass). It looked somewhat like a rocketpack which made the conversion easy. It's bigger but looks awesome and captures that Rogue Trader feel. You might also notice a Star Wars theme going on!?

The other miniature is a gift from Mark Vuletich, a friend and fellow gamer that often finds treasures like this one hidden at garage sales and antique fairs. I have no idea of the manufacturer but it's definitely a classic figure, obviously a dwarf and probably Gimli. Any help identifying the manufacturer would be appreciated. He certainly has plenty of character.

Gimli?

God bless and enjoy your week!

Dwarf Lords of Legend + Bugman's Rangers

Dwarf Lords of Legend.
This Painting Table Saturday I have the last two Dwarf Lords of Legend and I finished flocking Bugman's Dwarf Rangers. It's all classic eighties Citadel Miniatures this week.

Bugman's Rangers.

My original box of Bugman's Dwarf Rangers had 17 miniatures; Command, Standard Bearer, Musician and Champion models plus 13 Troopers. However, I dislike painting miniatures that are exactly the same. Because the troops were made up of only four different sculpts (head variants), I sold the remainder. I took some creative licence with the shields and livery also.

My Bugman's Dwarf Rangers box.

The back of the box tells the story of a grizzled stranger bringing a cart load of ale to the Dwarfhold Karak-Varn as a gift for the King. This was many years since the sacking of Bugman's Brewery by goblins. Joseph Bugman was a name 'half forgotten and wreathed in legend'. Upon tasting the brew, the Dwarf King recognised the Master Brewer and onetime Ranger Captain.

'Bugman's Dwarf Rangers were re-formed at Karak-Varn, and his reputation and his brewing skills brought Dwarves from miles around flocking to his banner. The expedition to reconquer and re-establish Bugman's Brewery took on the proportions of a holy war.'

As for the Dwarf Lords of Legend, I get the feeling The Baron and Lastro Lupintal are somehow connected. The former fought against a vampire and the latter was afflicted by lycanthropy. At least, that's what I made out of their one-line back story.

Lastro Lupintal.

The Baron.

09. King Gorrin, Slayed Gorbald the Gruesome greenskin at the battle of Drakkaz-Snor.
10. Borax Bloodaxe, amassed a fortune that required 5 vaults to store.
11. The Baron, fought against the despicable Count Horlichs of Averland.
12. Throbin Death-eye, axe polished in blood and a gaze that was said to slay with a glance.
13. Lastro Lupintal, cursed to howl at every full moon by a Norscan witch.
14. Kimril Giant Slayer, first slayer and bested the Giant twins Thunderguts and Stormbelly.
15. Uther, vowed to slay 100 Skaven every 7th day.
16. Angus, fell at Klumti Pass crushed by the bodies of his dead foes.

God bless you and have some fun this week!

Dwarf Lords of Legend + Asgard Barbarians

Painting Table Saturday.
Thanks to Nick with his challenge to paint a mini each week in 2016, my painting table is getting some attention again. This Saturday I have finished two miniatures.

The first is Angus, one of the fabled Dwarf Lords of Legend. He's one of eight Citadel miniatures, sculpted by the legendary Perry twins, Alan and Michael. I have painted them all now except The Baron and Lastro Lupintal.

The second miniature is also a classic mid-eighties sculpt. An Asgard Barbarian, Karl Two Cuts. I have most of this Jes Goodwin collection but so far I have only painted Arflane the Archer. I have some work ahead of me! These miniatures have now been re-released by Alternate Armies, so I may pick up the few I am missing.
