A co-production of Marvel Productions and TSR, it was based on the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game. It came on TV around the same time as the fabled D&D Red Box hit the stores here in New Zealand.

| Sheila the Thief. |
A group of six kids are transported into a magic realm and have many adventures as they try to find a way home. They are joined by a baby unicorn and occasionally guided by an unhelpful cryptic fellow called the Dungeon Master.
The cautious and reserved Sheila would find courage when her friends needed her and was protective of her younger brother Bobby the Barbarian. Sheila has a magical cloak of invisibility, which reminds me of another burglar that I was fond of in my younger days.
Apparently Sheila wasn't a thief in the Spanish version of Dungeons & Dragons. She was a mage or illusionist. This makes the Hasslefree renaming of her as Lenore, a mysterious sorceress, a fitting tribute.

Got to say I've happy memories of watching that show as a child.

Ah Mario, I hope you enjoy shopping as much as painting then! Your blog inspired me to use brighter colours on some of my more fantastic miniatures. Especially the use of the primary colours on one figure, instead of a colour theme that involved complementary colours or muted pastels. I have some miniatures from my early painting days that come close but your work inspired me to do more with it. I call it 'Painting Loudly'. It really makes a miniature stand out on the gaming table.
DeleteUnfortunately, just as I was trying to convince my workmates that D&D was an interesting, intellectual and above all adult hobby this TV series popped up and shot me down in flames!

I have some sympathy for you. Considering what else was on TV at the time, Dungeons & Dragons deserves some praise. There is also the enigma of the final episode that was halted during production and never aired. The plot and some sketches can be found online.
DeleteNice idea. I remember the series well from when I was a kid. It didn't do much to raise the viewpoints of those around me either. I also remember the red box coming out I didn't buy it as I had the set previous to that, but iI did buy a blue box and a turquoise book. I remember them being good days.
ReplyDeleteKnight Rider and The A Team don't hold up so well with age either! Those three Mentzer D&D sets were gold though (and still are). The black masters set and then the golden immortals set followed. I was playing AD&D by then though... along with a multitude of other RPGS. Good days indeed.
DeleteSheila as an Illusionist is an interesting take on her. I may have to play with this idea.
